Corrective maintenance is the work done to restore equipment after a fault has occurred. It is reactive by definition: something has broken, and the job is to diagnose and fix it.
Definition
Corrective work is unavoidable, but its share of total workload is a health signal. Tracking corrective jobs against the same asset record as preventive ones shows whether a machine is failing repeatedly and whether the preventive schedule is doing its job.
Why it matters
Emergency repairs cost more per hour, disrupt the day's schedule, and often need parts nobody has in the van. Watching the planned-to-reactive ratio is one of the simplest ways to see whether maintenance is improving.
