Preventive maintenance is servicing carried out on a fixed schedule — by time or by usage — to stop equipment failing rather than to repair it after it has failed. Filter changes, inspections and calibrations are typical examples.
Definition
A preventive programme attaches a schedule to each asset, generates the work order automatically each cycle, and records what was checked. Over time the maintenance history shows which assets need more attention and which schedules can be relaxed.
Why it matters
Planned visits are shorter, cheaper and safer than emergency call-outs, and they extend asset life. Teams that shift work from reactive to planned normally see unplanned downtime fall and overtime costs drop with it.
