Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
MTBF
Mean time between failures is the average operating time between one breakdown and the next for a given asset. It is a measure of reliability rather than of repair speed.
Definition
MTBF is calculated per asset from its failure history, so it only becomes meaningful once you have a proper asset register and a consistent record of corrective jobs. Rising MTBF means the asset is failing less often.
Why it matters
MTBF tells you whether your maintenance strategy is working and when a machine has reached the point where replacement is cheaper than repair. Read together with MTTR, it separates a reliability problem from a response problem.
