Technician Utilization

Wrench time

Technician utilization is the share of a technician's paid hours spent on productive work at the job site, as opposed to travelling, waiting or handling paperwork.

Definition

It is calculated by dividing on-site working hours by total available hours over a period. Time tracking on the work order — start, pause, finish — is what makes the figure trustworthy.

Why it matters

Low utilization usually means a dispatch or logistics problem, not a lazy team. Improving it is the cheapest way to increase capacity, because it adds output without adding headcount.
